Warped grate bars

Every now and then the Rayburn gets a little too hot. A while back it did this and I have managed to warp two of the grate bars. It almost doesnt matter as it still riddles fine but the clinker plate will sometimes hop off of its hooks when riddling it. When cool, they dont sit so high. I suspect they have sagged in the middle.

Pic below - its the centre two bars and you can see they are pushing the plate up.

Is there any way to unwarp them or are they stretched now so thats that? JulianF has some spares he has kindly offered me if they fit but I was curious if they could be fixed.

Whatever you do don't think that putting them in the forge for a bit and trying to hammer them straight will work, been there, done that

My brother in law was dog sitting for us one night, he’d lit the log burner, all of the vents were wide open, I asked him if he’d closed the lower vent when it was up to temperature “what vent” he said, sure enough the cast baffle plate was warped to hell, he did mention it was a very hot fire.

Letting ash build up doesn’t help either I don’t think. We’ve replaced our grates a few times. I just make new ones now, I don’t buy them. Last time I looked at spares for our fire it was £17 a go

As we burn only wood, we never open the bottom vent. I believe wood burns best on a bed of ash with air fed only from above. I have a stainless 3mm plate covering the grid. I let the ash build up a little on the plate but even when I scoop the ash out, I still leave half an inch on the plate. I do have to leave the door latched but not tight to get going.

I've made a number of grates for our open fire. The stuff thats held up the best in my experience is half inch rebar. Better even than scrap stainless i got from work.

I’d agree, rebar works well

Same here; rebar, I've previously done a couple of woodburners, works better than black mild steel of a similar section.
