Wanted: 90mm x 90mm x 3.0mm or 3.6mm Box section

As above I need a bit about 300mm in length or possibly longer.

I haven't managed to find any off cuts locally, has anybody got a bit hiding under a bench

Yes unfortunately, the upright post on my winch mounting plate is 80 x 80, so I need a sliding fit that is fairly close/tight so there's not to much slop....

I'm in the process of making a winch mounting bumper for the front of my Disco2, that allows me to lift the winch in and out when required...

I chucked some in the skip awhile back. Will look tomorrow if it’s fish out able . Pretty sure it was 500mm long. It might have been in the previous skip, but will look anyway

I've just looked in the William Twigg stock book and found a possible alternative to the 90 x 90 above, there appears to be 100 x 100 box with a 8mm wall thickness which would also do...

I might have an offcut of 90 square, not sure if it might be 5mm wall if you can get such a thing?

What's the critical dimensions?

Remember, as the wall size goes up the radius at the corners increases as well, so a thin wall section won't fit inside a thick wall one, even though the sizes suggest they will.

To get a really nice sliding fit I needed to add packers.
Probably over the top for you application but see the post below to show the idea (and the 10mm box I have)

Thinking about it now, it was probably OTT for my application as well, but when you start down a rabbit hole it's hard to turn around untill you get out the other end.

In the past to get a nice sliding fit I've fabricated the box from strip - doesn't take long to run 4 beads over that length

Or split a bigger box and reweld.

Cuts the welding in half and helps keep everything straight.
Would also work with angle.

You can get a better box inside a box fit if you lay and plug weld wear strips on the outside of inner box section, these wear strips can take out the slop, keep the rads away from each other and straddle the internal snurg/seam of the outer box. It’s what I do on sliding towbar pullouts. Makes finding a box inside a box fit a bit easier. Just saying.

This replacement landing leg I made up for the grinder was the same, box inside a box with wear strips unfortunately hidden, makes a good fit.

There is some 90x90x5mm here if you want it,mics at 80.5 internally so you may get away with it if you can get some of the seam weld off the inside with a finger sander.

If you can only get 100 x 100 and your box section has play you could always weld some thin strips to all 4 side to build it up.

(Ignore me. Others have already suggested that)

But one thing I don't think they have is if you can't get the seam weld out of the inside I just ran a grinding disc down the length I needed down the inside box section. Rather like a keyway.
