whats the fastest way to get some paperwork under my belt, whats the fastest way to get some codes, can weld mig, tig, mma, can you do 1 day courses or do you have to do ten weeks etc. what would be the first one to do... i presume the easiest.. wouldnt mind going in the direction of petrochemical, oil and gas type of thing, any advice welcome.. will travel over to UK no problem.

Danny, phone these people. They train and test. I believe they have a school at this site, I know they have one in Tipton, West Mids. These are by far the best (and probably cheapest) company to test with, we are told.

expect to pay 1K a codeing (no training), you can get tested any ware, a moderator comes out watches you do your test piece, then sends it away for whatever testing the particular coding requires (bend, etch, xray etc)...... local welding suppliers will/or know someone who's involved in testing.....
Without wanting to sound like Dr Doom, there only really of use for a specific job.... no point in getting coded in the vain hope that it might be of use for a job that might be hireing.... so work first coding second...

hi guys, thanks for the advice, how good am i, well who knows, i,ll always be learning i suppose, i've been welding nearly 15 years now and am very particulair, but with out any paper who knows, i have a contact in the petrochemical industry who over see's the construction of oil platforms, suppose i'll ask him what i'd need qualification wise if he was to employ me, will contact above as well to see what they say, i just have an idea that if i get some sort of qaulification to say this guy can weld to such and such standard then at least people can see, yeah this guy can weld to a certain standard, and then maybe they will help me gain the code for the job in mind. just an idea, thanks

there do a foot in the door test, and have there own approved witness and inspectors, have a word first before you blow a fortune on a testing ot, that may not apply....... A local training school should be able to put you on the right path to get the necessary, if you can weld to a decent standard than even the coding witness, could help you to achieve the standard......
My advice is not nassarly not to do it, but to tread careful before you decide, It Its very very easy to spend several K on achieving codings that are not going to help in the long run....

codings will vary in price depending on the testing needed, however coded in "MIG" isn't going to mean much, even butt and fillet requires 2 tests, in the same material...
the list of codings is endless and is specific to the job in hand, even a nuclear standard, in 6g is only going to let you weld just that to the engineering controls (so maybe only on that one job) , there not transferable...

If you have not welded pipework to x-ray standard you will struggle to get a petro-chem job. A good base coding would be asme IX 6G in carbon steel MMA. That would show a prospective employer that can weld to a good standard before they have to pay for any job specific coding. W/A
