Been looking around this forum for a while, researching.
Found it a great source for info, thanks.
Decided to try hobby alu welding saving up for GYS 207 machine.
But tempted by ebay murex transtig 201.
Anyway hello from me. John.

Hello and welcome, both good machines I believe but many more people better qualified than me to comment.

Both machines are very good but are different types of machines. One is a transformer (Murex) & the other an inverter (GYS). The transformer is a very well built machine with a good weld quality but lacks the adjustability and fine tuning of the inverter. The GYS 207 is brilliant machine, lots of adjustability and easy to understand panel with a tidy AC arc. Adjustability can make learning a lot easier and make the learning curve more enjoyable.

There is obviously a very big difference in price, with the GYS being around £1450ish whilst a Murex 2nd hand is probably not going to run you anywhere near that. There are plenty of other machines on the market that'll give you the adjustability that'd be beneficial to you but won't cost you that much. Have a look around online.. consider Parweld, Jasic etc.. You might find something that tickles your fancy.

I was going to suggest a look at a Parweld or Thermal Arc too, nearly all the toys for less dough. The easy AC default settings feature on the GYS are a big help to beginners though so don't dismiss it too easily.

Thanks for the welcome and advice. I now realise the murex may not be quite right for me.
The machines based around £1000 all look suitable just couldn't choose one, so threw in the gys and I like the colour.

My vote goes with the Parweld 202, £1000 will get you machine, torch and pedal with a little left over for some rods/ consumables. Brilliant machine for the money.

The MUREX is Inverter based like the others. Top notch too, with all the bells & whistles on. Just bear in mind they can be pricey to fix if they develop a fault.

Happy to be corrected, I had in mind the older Murex TIG sets.

I will also need gas etc, at least I have the ppe.

BOC will be your best bet for gas providing you have a local agent, if not probably check out the rent free options from Adams gas etc..
