Getting back on topic 
I finally bit the bullet and started trying to fetch some wood out of this thing. I got my hands on an elderly spares/repairs 031AV (thanks @Wildefalcon), acquired a decent 20" bar and a suitable chain, carb kit and finally set about getting it going. No such luck. I suspect low/no crankcase vacuum or dead electronics. I can't fix either of those in time (for reasons I shall explain) so I dragged out the little MS210 with it's cute little 14" bar...
Took a dodgy cut to get the hang of it...
Got better at it with take #2...
...and it's a lot better than I had expected to achieve freehand.
It fits and it's not at twisted as it looks in the photo. The two sides are parallel within half an inch easily but I decided to leave it there and come up with some other plan. I don't have a rewsaw blade for the little 301 so I need to jury rig something with the big old Clarke 7x12 (or whatever it is).
The rush is because it appears the stump may still be available and coming my way. It's still in the ground and my tree chap (who keeps popping over for offcuts of rebar) says he may be able to get it for me. I should probably invest in a few more blades for the chainsaw. That trunk is already quite a big job for a little saw.

I bought the wrong carb kit off eBay which was a mistake of my own making (there are multiple variants!) and when I told the seller it didn't fit, they gave me a refund and offered to help find the right one!
I can't recommend them highly enough, that is unusual customer care these days.
