W160 Frost Auto Resoration - Spot Welder

ollowing a thread in the forum re seam sealers led me to Frost Auto Restorers website - http://www.frost.co.uk/default.asp.

Their Product code W160 lists a Spot Welding Unit that is powered by a MMA welder and the claim that it is possible to spot weld from one side only.

Does anyone have any experience of this device?

Using a MIG to produce button (plug) weld has on two occasions needed me to extinguish a small fire inside a cavity because Waxoyl or some other rust retardent had been used at some earlier time. In one instance I had to drill a hole to allow a water jet into the space. In the other case a hole was already available.

I wonder if the 'spot welder' described might allow welding without sufficient heat build up to ignite any combustibles in the area.

There are people selling shrouds with slots in them to do this sort of thing with mig welders too. I guess the idea is you get enough oomph into the first sheet that you start to melt the other sheet as well.

It's an interesting alternative to plug welding that I haven't tried yet, but to achieve a weld you'd still have to melt the second sheet, so the fire problems probably wouldn't be solved.

i actually have one of them and i must say it is pretty good. it uses a carbon rod with what looks like a copper jacket. i use it for all my spot welds not had a problem get good penertration and saves faffing about drilling holes for plug welds. just make sure your arc welder can go down to a low enough ampage. but i would deffinatly recommend it.

Hello Minimole

I've been looking at various stick welders and 40A is the lowest output I've found.

Is this ow enough tp suit the 'spot welder'?

That is the arc welder i use with that spot welder. goes nice and low i forget exactly how low but i think it is something like 25 amps with a max of about 110 amps. which is nice for what i use it for. I have used 1.6mm rods to weld my mini in the past with this weld and it works well ( ran out of gas for the mig and i was too lazy to go get more) that little spot weld works at around 40 - 60 amps i set my arc welder to 45 to do spot welds on my mini if that helps.
