VW Up! - What to look out for?

We are in need of a cheap temporary car, wife's colleague has offered us a 2012 VW Up for a good price

It has some cosmetic damage including the apparently common fuel filler area rust (must have been copying Ford)

She has had it 10 years, new tyres and battery recently. Advisory for rusty suspension at rear, I'm guessing shocks

Anything I should be looking at in particular? It is a 1.0

Check the rear axle as they do show corrosion.

Rear brakes/handbrake people usually neglect so high lever can be common.

Rust around the filler flap is very common as they didn't put dirt liners in the back.

These are cambelt not chain, as I remember with the neighbours up they are not cheap to do, just incase it needs one.

Not a bad thing, 80k, looks like it's been stood

Back end is quite rusty but solid, shockers need swapping

I said the handbrake was high, Mrs said I pull them too hard.....

Full service kit (not cambelt) but including 2 shocks is £132 from Autodoc

It's got a scrape on the passenger side and needs a damn good bath

We pick it up Sunday

Good little cars, my eldest had one as his first car. Nicer to drive than some small cars, good front leg room in the 3 door.

My eldest has one too, (2014 MY), only problem he’s has was the handbrake seizing on when he left it parked in Saint Omer for a week, I had no tools with me (450 km away from home), couldn’t get the wheels off as they were stuck to the drums… That turned out expensive but all fine now, according to the owner forums it’s not an uncommon problem.
