Depends on the mileage, from what I’ve seen on some transporter forums early 2.5 T5’s camshafts were prone to wear prematurely. Later ones are supposed to be better. I had to replace the one in mine at 235000 miles as one lobe had worn enough to wear a hole through the follower. Just the parts to replace it cost £1500

T5 1.9 should have a 5 speed gearbox 2.5 will be 6 speed. I have the 130hp 2.5 and haven’t had that much go wrong, clutch and camshaft so far, apart from the usual brake pads and discs. I do know someone that has a T5 1.9 as a camper and they tell me it’s a little slow on hills but it could weight quite a bit when loaded.
Not that one, that year makes it a T5. The 2.5 T4, 5 cylinder is the bomb proof one.
The 2.5 T5 had many issues & depended on luck & religious servicing to avoid expensive problems.
The T5 1.9 was a bit sluggish but doesn't have the same reputation for mechanical issues.

Yep. 1.9 tdi is more reliabile than 2.5 pd tdi. The 1.9 tdi can be serviced by any decent mechanic, 2.5 is a lot more involved and require special tools to change camshafts…

Having said which, I still have an 02 T4 2.5 and I think the engine's better than any other. Stock, mine's only 102hp but so far (17+ yrs) that's always been more than adequate. People take them up beyond 140hp but I like it as is, I don't mind the lack of bells & whistles, it's solid.
The problem is the VW premium,

The 2.5 V5 petrol in my old T4 is a beautiful engine. Audi VAG iirc.

Not sure on all the engine options, but early T4s did have an indirect 2.4, from the era where VW cylinder heads used to regularly crack.

T4’s in 96 had a 5 cyl 2.4 non turbo vag engine, I think earlier ones did as well. Later ones had a direct injection 5 cyl 2.5 turbo vag engine
