VW PD Engine Scared Bejesus Out Me!

Friend said their '09 Passat had wee bit of a judder and would i sit in passenger seat, listen and give opinion.....
Ok says i thinking probably just DMF starting to go.
Holy effin expletives!!!
This thing felt like it was going to break into a thousand pieces the shake and bang was that violent!
Only happpens between 2-3k revs, fine below and ok above if you manage to power through to higher revs.
No lights on dash.
Feels like the worst misfire you could possibly imagine, really undriveable.
Anyone have any suggestions before i'm cornered, then coerced into getting my hands dirty?

This VW dmf wiped out most of the bellhousing.

i'm now more thinking it is a fueling or timing issue, never felt anything like this before.
It was as if they were driving over fallen tree trunks
Think it idles ok too.

Absolutely, car only 15yr old.
It is a nice car, all the luxuries but not realistically driveable with this issue

Land Rover had them in the Td5 from 1998.

Yes I have one in an 09 vw t5 and an 02 vw t4.
I haven’t had the dmf problem with mine, but had to replace the clutch so the dmf was done at the same time.
The t5 I have has the 2.5 bnz engine which I believe is the pd engine. That had the camshaft wear, even that didn’t really make the engine shake but it had a odd induction noise because one valve wasn’t opening very far if at all. No codes set with that either.

Does it have variable valve timing? Could be the transition point at those revs
I'd say if it was the flywheel it would be bad at all speeds.

The one mounted on my workshop wall took the bell housing and starter motor out of the car it tried to get out of.

Owner rocked up - with noisey flywheel - I quoted him - he told me "I was too dear" - I told him "not to drive it" - he got in car and drove to end of yard and it exploded as he got onto the main roadway - we pushed it back and the bill just got bigger

This one feels like the power unit is trying to do an Elvis and leave the building

No vvt afaik.
I agree on being bad at all speeds, that is mostly my experience, hence suspecting something else.
Must qualify as it was only a very brief passenger seat test

The PD turbo engines have a variable vane turbo, not sure wether it would caause issues like that though ?
As others have said you would notice the flywheel more especially at tickover.

I overfilled my BMW bike with oil several years ago, only about 1/2 above mid level. I went on a test ride after and once it hit 3500rpm there was horrendous vibes through the bike. I immediately thought I’d hit some sort of rumble strip, but the road was clear. I pulled over to see if m rod was hanging out of the engine casing, but all appeared normal.

Once I got home I inquired on a forum and was soon told that overfilling is something never to do…

Nobody knows why, some deny it can cause the vibes, but I have experimented since and found the vibes start as soon as the oil goes a touch above the midway mark on the sigh glass.

It’s still way below the crankshaft throw, so the cranks not hitting the oil. I can only imagine something to do with the volume of free air inside the crankcase reaches some sort of tipping point, as both pistons rise and fall simultaneously.
