Volvo XC90 , non functioning rear door locks

A bit of a long shot even for this mine of information. My son’s XC90 has developed a fault with the back door locks which can’t be opened from either inside or outside. Has anyone come across this issue? A cheap scan tool does not show up any faults but fleeting message, not to be repeated , on the car’s info screen said something about child locks. So at a guess it’s an electrical / solenoid issue.
Just to complicate matters son and family and two dogs, plus car have been “ marooned” in Germany since the start of the last “ lockdown” . The nearest Volvo dealer can’t look at it until the end of the month and needs it for two days.
Never rains but. ....... ! However they are all happy and healthy !

Switch it off and on again? Battery disconnect
Take it they cycled the central locking a few times

If I remember right on the V70 there is a common issue behind the inside door trim where the pull rods basically break off...I fixed at least one but I can't remember what the exact problem was...I think it all relied on a weak bit of plastic somewhere that I was able to botch back together.

I would say it's worth taking off the inner door trim and taking a look to make sure all the rods are still connected up (assuming the v70 and xc90 doors work the same way of course).

Assume he has checked the wires at the hinge for any breaks?

Thanks for the replies but as the doors cant be opened, I assume that trim removal or loom inspection aint possible, but I will pass on the info anyway.

This happened on my brother in law's V40, the dealer claimed they'd never seen the problem before and wanted to charge him for diagnosis/repair. A mountain of evidence from the online Volvo community suggested he was telling lies. It was fixed FOC.

I had a problem with one rear door on my E39 years ago. Dealers said they'd have to remove the trim to get to the entrails, and couldn't rule out damaging it.

I eventually got it to open by opening the window and operating both handles simultaneously - the problem never reoccurred.

The Volvo problem sounds more tricky, affecting both doors as it does.

If its both doors, sound like some sort of arty farty child lock.

Had to do swmbos v70 drivers side rear door. It packed up a day or two before its mot, which it failed, because the inspector couldnt access the rear seat belts to inspect them. I had no problem opening the door by putting my hand through the drivers door and working the rear handle. No good apparently, youve got to be able to open it from outside. I wasnt please with that reply! Turned out to be the rod from the handle had become detached near the locking mechanism.

The v70 has loads of mini relays which seemed on mine to be the cause of many headaches, I ordered a 20 bag of relays, changed them all, sorted.
