How do I work out the volume (gallons or litres) in a piece of box section?

measure the inside of the section (a & B) in cms, measure the length (c) (cms) multiply all three together and divide by 1000 for litres

Unless my memory fails me, and it sometimes does, measure the inside dimensions of the box, say 47mm by 97mm, multiply the two (4559 square millimeters) is the cross sectional area, then multiply that by the inside length, let's say 1000mm and you have 45590000 cubic millimeters.

Now in nice simple decimal units, you divide by 1000 to get cubic centimeters or another 1000 to get cubic litres which would be 4.559 or 4 and a half litres.

Sound about right? meter piece of 50 x 100 would take 4.5 lits? I think so.

Width x Width x Length

OK for gallons, now divide by 4.546 - about one gallon

Please tell me I haven't screwed up.

thanks for that, didn't think it was as easy as that though. I have had a google for info loke this but obviously I am not tyoing in the correct search terms. Is there a website somewhere that has all this kind of stuff on it?

volume is as above, there's nothing more too it. especially in this case where you can calculate a cross section and multiply it by a length. slight more complicated if the cross section isn't uniform, or there are spheres, or parts of them, involved.

you can roughly work out the volume of practically any object if you can split it up, or approximate complicated parts of it.

Furry Freak - you did ask for feedback so I'll come right out with it and suggest litres might normally be multiplied rather than divided to make gallons, and it depends whose gallons you are using - American gallons are smaller than UK gallons, but everyone has the same size litre.

Malcolm, he asked for gallons and he lives in the UK, so that's probably UK gallons, I am surmising.

And sorry but to get liters to gallons you DIVIDE by 4.546

100 lits divided by 4.546 = 22 gallons.

By chance I gave an example that came out as 4.5 lts, which is pretty much 1 gallon. IE 4.5 divided by 4.5.
If I multiplied I would have got 20 gallons. Where do you by your petrol?

Metres or millimetres! Anything else will ALWAYS confuse.

Daz, the basic principle to working out the volume of anything is to get it's 3 sizes (length, width, height), and multiply together.

Even more fun when metric and imperial are used together! Had a great one last week, got given a sketch for a charge cooler header tank...

There's no dimensions on it says i. Customer responds with 'it's drawn to scale'. Turns out that the 'scale' was 1cm:1inch i.e. 60mm = 6 inches

I have to say that for me it depends on which side of the ruler is against what I am measuring, so the left hand piece gets measured in imperial and the right hand piece in metric. If I am cutting an arbitrary piece, I measure to which ever mark falls nearest to where I want to cut.

I weigh in kilos and drive in miles, I drink pints and measure litres. I'm a product of the cross over generation.

Crazy World. Huh.

And incidentally, I measure volume - in decibels. Ha Ha.

Thanks for the info and input guys, much appreciated. Now for a couple of answers for you. FF, the reason I need to know the volume is I am making a hydraulic logsplitter, I am mounting some box section on top of an escort van rear axle to act as part of the chasis (it is going to be towable) but I want to also use it as the tank for the hydraulic fluid to kill two birds with one stone, so need to know volume. And by the by I was after uk gallons.
To Luke and jugs cheers for the links, most useful. The reason I asked for websites is they generally have loads of different forulae on them that I would find useful, not just for working out volume. I too shamefully admit that on occasion I mix metric and imperial and I also use centimetres, whatever is easiest for me to understand and remember, BUT if I am making a half decent drawing for someone else or if I want to be reasonably accurate then I use mm or decimals thereof. And last one to Malcom, it might be quite handy to have a wee sticky somewhere with links to these types of websites, we could have how to work out cable sizes for wiring, how to work out volumes, decimal/imperial equivelents, conversion charts etc etc. I have a fair bit of info on electrical/electronic stuff that may be of use that I could post in.

Some years back, our service manager at work ordered a bespoke wooden packing crate to suit a particular piece of equipment (about the size of a gas fire but heavy) we were shipping abroad. So he guesstimated the dimensions, rang the case makers (BD Case as it was then) and rattled off an order number. Then he went on holiday.
A few days later BD's wagon arrives and the driver asks if we have a forklift.
Mystified, we went outside to find on the back of his truck a crate the size of a garden shed.
The chief had measured in centimetres but somehow it got ordered in inches...
