drills have the hole in the horizontal position and the key tends to fall out. Also yout attention os on the quill and you'll easily see it.
On the lathe the cuck key is usually tightened at the 12 o'clock position and the key stays in easily. then when you are about to engage you are usually concentrating on the tool in the post as opposed to the chuck.
its easily done and causes many accidents.

I have a guard in place with a micro switch that won't let the motor run if the guard issint down. With the key in place, the guard won't go down.

For my sins I did once leave the key in. Once. The key embedding itself in the wall behind me was an attention-getter and I've not done it since. It wasn't possible to leave the key in the machines I was taught on because of the interlocked chuckguards. One of my round tuit jobs is perhaps modifying the chuck key with a spring so it cannot be left in place, but I'm undecided about whether it would just be a hindrance.

So I got a tool post in exchange for a few beers. Didn't have any bolts to hold the tooling, but I managed to measure them and order some shiny new ones.



The big nut at the top didn't have a lever, and there is evidence that someone tried to weld something in place.
I just drilled straight through it so that I can put a lever through to tighten.

Got my Vfd all wired up and she runs! Just need to sort some tooling, and a key for my chuck.

I have noticed tooling comes in different sizes, what six lie do I get? Where do I get shimms, and how do I measure the size of chuck key I need?

make up some 1/8 th and 1/16th strips up . grind the teeth of some hacksaw blades and snap of to length and there's your packers if u still need higher just put a half inch or a quarter inch tool underneath . measure the cross section of your chuck and that will give u the size to ask for
