vice repair

Evening gents, I started to try and repair a broken vice today but I haven't got a clue what rod to use and I only have a inverter stick welder, I thought that I had a few cast rods but I'm not sure now, I have a few rods separate to my normal s/steel and 6013 but there are no markings other than midweld blue, does anybody know what these rods are, they are 3.2 dia. Thanks in advance for any info.

just to note a repair will only make it light usage after that

also best to upload some pics as well so others can give you pointers on the welding of it

also heat the vice up as well

I would have thought it would light use after but after watching this video with a repaired vice I guess it comes down to the quality of the repair

It doesn't matter light usage is ok I have a larger and somewhat better record vice that I usually use. By the way I purchased the vice some years ago and never noticed that it had been previously welded till I attempted to bend some s/steel using a piece of scaffold pipe and broke the front off, the original welding was worse than mine but it was strong so I'm not that bothered if to doesn't get fixed. I've repaired a vice before with cast rods but for the life of me I don't know which they are or even if I've still got some left. Thanks for the reply.

Try grinding the end of one of the rods and look to see what colour the sparks are. That should give you a clue to type of metal.

What colour should they be.

Think it's red for CI and yellow for MS and I think SS is whiteish yellow.

I had a repaired vice, gave it some right Welly, pushing in wheel bearings and all sorts, I did kill it again in the end but took over 10 years

I repaired a Record 23 that some gorilla burst in half by swinging on it with a scaffold tube.
I vee'd it out well and used oxy acetylene braze and it worked fine.

If the same gorilla gave it the scaffold tube treatment I'm sure it would go again but if not abused it's ok.

Must get around to giving it a lick of paint sometime.

Thanks for all replies but I neither have access to any brazing equipment or any heat scours so if I can't repair it the scrap man can have it and I'll look for another one at the auctions. Back to my original question does anybody know what the midweld blue rods are for.

Get some rods for cast, v it out and have a go, nothing to lose

I use Lincoln Reptec cast 3 rods for jobs like this - but any ENiFe-CI electrode would do it.

I like restoring a damaged big vice - bit of grinding and some blue paint - nobody is the wiser.

Thanks but does anybody know what the Midweld Blue rod are for. That was my question.
