Vice repair

Another one of these.

I have a Record 25 vice, a dirty great thing.
The jaws are loose, one of the screws is missing and the ther wont turn either tighter or looser.

Is it practical to Mig weld the jaw to the body of the vice or will this crack it?

I did this years back to an unnamed vice with no problems, but i dont want tokillthe big jobbie.

Don't know if it will crack yours if its the right thing to do but I did that to my welding vice I wouldn't do it to my other one. Have to say its done many years since welding and mine didn't crack

Why not just but the correct screw to fit or is the thread damaged in the frame. Welding it in place seems a little excessive.

Can't see a couple of tack welds cracking a bloody big vice like a Record 25, Chunk!

And you could always grind them off when you want to fit new jaws

Clean and fill the holes with JBweld and tap some threads to hold the jaws on.

I'd get new screws and remove the stuck one, rather than bodge it.

that is the worst idea I've heard. You might as well use duct tape? I thought we were talking about doing it properly?

The trick to getting the screw out is to make a short screwdriver from hex bar - lightly grip it in the screw head with the vice, and undo with a spanner. The vice then keeps the driver in the slot - you slightly loosen the vice as you apply decent torque with the spanner. Retap the threads and replace the screws - if it's an old Record they will probably be Whitworth countersink heads - possibly 3/8"

I removed stuck screws with an impect driver in mine. New ones obtained from a local fastening supplier, countersunk 3/8 whitworth as I recall. Dead cheap.

They were slightly too long, I wanted 7/8" and they only had 1" I think. The lenth of the screw required is exactly the thickness of two jaws, so I put the screw through the holes in both jaws, back to back, as a cutting jig.
