Vice advice and anvil please.

Hello, I am looking for a large vice to go at the other end of the bench in the workshop and have been looking on ebay particularly at ones made by record and there are many different numbers / types. Just wondering does anyone know what the numbers relate to ? There are some 35's 85's and even some 1ton models.
Also I'm looking for a large anvil for outside metal shaping/bashing, do these come in difeerent sizes/weights ? My friend who has one at his farm says his is a 5 cwt one.

Hi, on the anvils - yes they come in all sorts of sizes. the cost goes up with weight. there are different shapes etc, but for general metal bashing you just want a flat (ish) top and a round horn - most have these features. The bigger the better, generally. 5 cwt is nice and chunky, 1 or 1.5 or 2 cwt is more common. I wouldn't bother going below 2 if you can help it.

Mine is 1cwt. Works OK and easy enough to move around.

Find the Record number (ignore the T)then click on order code for specs.

Don't go too much on the pics,they've used the same pic for more than one model.

Record vices with "Heavy Duty" cast in them are often cast steel,instead of cast iron.They are intended as fitters vices and will stand more bashing.
If looking on ebay,try to find one with original but worn paint,rather than a repaint.
Repaints could have come from the bottom of a well,and the edges of the threads will have rusted away.

I have a Record number 6 and a 25. Think about if you want a quick release and think carefuly about the size. They are bigger than you think!

I like the size of my 6, but it doesn't have a quick release. The 25 has a quick release but in all honesty, is a bit too big. I'll take a photo, they are next to each other at the moment.

Don't buy one with rubbish jaws, they are expensive to replace. However you can turn them over and get a good edge on them again, so that's an option if the tops of the jaws are just a bit chewed up.

My 6 and 25, and a silicone sealant for scale. 25 isn't bolted down, just left on the bench (old dressing table really)
