If you do get a sewing machine it will have a crankshaft in there to impart a reciprocating motion to the needle, this may work as a means of oscillating your plate?

The old pedstal and belt fat wobblers /tone up machines

it's been a long time since I've seen one of those! :-)

ther's all sort of /new/ stuff around now, ultrasonic liposuction sounds interesting. Breaks down fat without having to poke things in the body!

But that's drifting away from 'engineering'...

nice idea but may not be strong enough to move a plate with 12 stone on top!
