hello im very new to this arc welding stuff and have just bought a 160 fusion inverter welder and on the front are two holes one with + one with - which does the electrode holder and the earth clamp go into please. silly question i know. thanks!!
Most common set up for DC arc welding is electrode positive, some specialised electrodes call for electrode negative, some will run happily either way, electrode negative can be useful on thin materials, to reduce the possibility of burning through.
Its a DC inverter, what electrodes are you planning to use, and what material thickness, the recommended polarity will be marked on the electrode pack,
hi, im using 2.5 x 300mm. it says 60-90 flat 60-80 vertical what ever that means?? i will be welding different sections from quarter inch round to 5/16 flat to horseshoes to make alsorts of extentions
That's the current range, 60 to 90 amps welding in the flat position, the electrode should have a code on the flux, and on the pack, most common is E6013, but from what you describe electrode positive will be just fine, have a look through the arc welding tutorial, you will find it very helpful, anything not covered or that you don't understand just ask away, no such thing as a daft question on here.
cheers for your thoughts m8! yep that is the rods they sold me. so i tinker about the the amps between 60- 90 until im happy, yes?
and thanks again i am going to experiment tomorrow. let you know how badly it goes lol!
Start off with the amps high, it will help you to strike up without sticking, then as you gain confidence turn them down a bit, also try reversing the polarity, you wont do any harm, and as said can help to prevent over penetration and burn through on lighter sections.

vertical up moving in an up position Ie (Bottom to top)
Vertical down moving in an down postion ie (top to Bottom)
Welding angles are slightly different from each position juice is slight different as well, You will have the juice running slightly hotter when welding down, and your travel speed will also be a lot quicker.
