vertical welding Amps help

Hi all

I am wanting to practise my vertical welding technique, i have used the chart in the TIG tutorial can anyone help me by telling me how to alter the amps for vertical welding of each of the joints. I will be practising using 3mm mild to start with.

Rob, it's best that you keep your amps as recommended, but adjust to suit what feels right - as you should anyway. Your current can vary within quite a range depending on how fast you move and how you feed your wire. In most circumstances you should be looking to get the current as high as you can whilst avoiding undercutting, then you just bomb along.

I can't say I adjust for position in Tig anything like as much as I do for joint type.

In Mig and MMA, obviously, things are very different.

I've never tried vertical tig, can someone quickly explain the technique?

Ie torch pointed up or down, and how do you feed the filler? ta

I've done some vertical fillets on mild - work bottom to top, torch angle I used was probably 15-20 degrees inclined upward (i.e. tip is higher than back cap). Filler I fed in from the top (careful - the heat rising is pretty intense), and I did this at an angle approx 15 degrees from vertical. Pretty pleased with the results on that.
