Did anyone else watch this video and think there has to be a vastly better way of doing that?
gouging massive holes in it for the small plates, and then using a square plate with sharp square corners, and not only that but it looks like he did his stop/starts right on those corners?!

I know nothing but still would not have done it like that.

If I had to do one for me it would be fully welded both sides & then a fish plate over the web.

Not sure if thats right or wrong (or cost effective for production) but sure it would be strong.

For ever telling the fitters off for it on the ships when they are repairing the container guide cells. Seen work like this done in ship yards properly on the ships hull. Round the corners on the fitted plate and part that has had the chunk taken out. Welded from both sides 60/30 split for the bevel depending on thickness, thinner can be welded from one side but beveled all the way through the thickness usually. Root weld, multiple passes if thick enough no termination of welds on top of each other (staggered), no termination of welds on corners preferably as far away as feasible. Then either inspected by dye penetrant, magnetic iron fillings or x Ray. Sometimes if there is space they add run in and run off plates that are then chopped off and sent off for destructive testing and etch testing. Structural stuff is no joke and not for half arsing

Never seen runoff plates sent away for testing. The idea of run off plates is to ensure there’s no porosity in the start of the run and that the weld is up to temperature so you get no cold lap.

They are a bit of an oddity to us i believe and its only done very occasionally at the surveyors request. They can be quite long sometimes long enough to consume a stick and a half or so so that the welders start stop can be analysed as well
