I am trying too brightspark , i bid £120 yesterday on a 4" abwood machine vice on fleabay and it went for more than that. i just need something to get me up and running.

I was in the same situation and ended up going for vertex. Lucky for me the place that sell them is not too far away (RDGtools) so was able to have a good look before parting with some cash. I have the 6 inch rotary table with chuck and the 4 inch vice and I have to say the quality is superb no back lash and they nip up straight and true. I think vertex are the better end of the market as RDG work closely with the factory to make sure they are right. Just for your interest RDG now seem to own the Myford name.
vertex are good for the price! get what you pay for though 
i think my dads vices were in excess of £200 each seem to recall them being abwood.
also RDG own the myford name :S?? they went bust didnt they...? last i heard myford were authoning all there stock off, massive shame the machines just coudnt keep up with the chineese imports, even though myford mills were imported from taiwan then branded by myford lol

Is the slot drill/end mill coming loose in the chuck luke ?
Quite normal for those ER and similar not to do so. That includes cheap Chester to German Wabeco, the cutter always drops.
Never had a prob with whats called the finger collets got two full sets.
Vertex aint bad for asian and are of the best that area produces. Far short of British and US stuff though.
Dont know if i would risk a mill vice but the rotary tables take some stick, used daily for 13 years, thousands of revs with nothing more than an oil. Theres backlash in my 8" RT always has had but you can take it out.
Shops own brand makes can be iffy i will never buy a Glanze tool again.

The collets have a step in the bottom of them. The chuck has a pin inside it. Originally I thought the step locked against the pin to stop it turning. If you put the collet in like that it doesn't tighten up. The step has to stand on top of the pin, so that it sticks out enough for the cone to tighten down properly.
I wonder if the idea is for this to function as some sort of overload device, or if I'm just missing something. I'm new to machining and the chuck didn't come with any paperwork.

From memory locate that collet in holder and screw up the external collar somewhere near. Then screw in a milling cutter so that the centre touches the point inside the holder. Then back off cutter think its 1/4 to 3/4 a rev and tighten up the outside nut with two C spanners or similar.
Its been 7 yrs.
