I`m wanting a 12v coil just for a project. I`ve seen a a circuit diagram for a DIY HV electric fence. It comprises of a capacitor and some other components such as resistors and a 12v coil from a car. Running off a battery.

What is the difference between a coil costing under a fiver, and one costing over £20?

For a non-critical job like that, I'd be down the local breakers asking for the cheapest coil they could find. You could probably buy two and have a spare for not much more.

Does the circuit diagram specify the expected resistance of the primary side of the coil? -there's a big variation on these. Google says that the DLB 105 coil has a 2.8 Ohm primary which would be consistent with a points style 12v sports coil. Ballasted coils are usually about 2 Ohm primary. Coils for so-called Constant Energy electronic ignition systems are usually less than 1 Ohm primary resistance.

Early electric fence generators used a car coil and a set of points that were opened by a pendulum that was moved by an electromagnet. Rate of "shock" depended on the length of pendulum. I was going to make my own then found proper items were cheap to buy from agricultural merchants.

They will generally be a 9 volt coil then, and may not last long on 12 volt supply.

You can buy a simple full 12 volt coil that would be better for this job, I’d think.

I was going to make my own then found proper items were cheap to buy from agricultural merchants.

I did look online a few weeks ago. The mains powered ones were around £50. I agree that 50 is not a lot to electrify a fence for a valid reason. For example, keeping animals enclosed or 'maybe' foxes out, mother in law visits.

The 'squirrel on bird feeders' is what drove me to the DIY project idea. Even with no purpose, I wanted to have a go. I have had 'an interest' in learning about electronics for quite some time. Part curiosity, and partly to engage the grey matter in something different. Unfortunately I have never come across a mentor at any level.

I got 3 cheap old books on electronics from the bay. First impression from a cursory glance through the pages of one book was, "this is like algebra'! Keeping in mind that I was the spotty kid told to go and count the school railings, during that subject.
