as from janurary the 4th .2011 all vat registered buisneses will have to pay 20 percent instead of the current 17 and a half percent . just thought id cheer everyone up

At least they went for a round number - it was 19.6% for the bits I ordered from France a few weeks ago. Try working that out in your head.

And they claim it back at 20% so it doesn't matter to them. It's the retail customer and non-registered businesses that get stung, even the latter can adjust their margins to compensate.

When the Vat when back up to 17.5% last year it's amazing how many people got it wrong, I saw price increases equivalent to 20%. I wonder how many companies will get it wrong this time and increase prices by 25%?

Vat goes to the government not the retailer and not the rich. It will certainly make me think twice before making non essential purchases knowing that a fifth of what I'm paying is on money that I have already paid income tax on.

Just to cheer you up, anything with duty on, VAT is payable on top of the duty paid price, i.e there is VAT on the duty!

I think a vat hike was just about the worst option they could have gone for...makes everything look more expensive ( well OK it actually is)

income tax would have meant you had less cash to spend... but IME when things look more expensive people are less inclined to spend what little they may not have

I dont think there was any easy way or soloution. We all have to pay more tax in one form or another to try and get the country out of the mess its in.

Atleast they are making the people on benefits contribute aswell...........may sound a bit controversial, but all my working life, I am sick of going thru hard times and worrying about affording things/job security etc and the long term unemployed carry on the same as usual because they know there money will be there at the end of every fortnight.

And before the backlash starts, I am not talking about people who genuinely need help, I am talking about the **** takers who don't want to work because its easier to sit at home, drink cheap lager and smoke knock off fags while having 3 or 4 kids that the state will clothe and feed. You only have to watch one episode of Jeromy Kyle to know the sort I mean.
