Hi all.
At best, I'm an amateur shade tree "mechanic".
I self installed a Mk3 ABA into air cooled '81 Vanagon. Initial bugs and ongoing exhaust issues aside, it's run fine for many thousands of KM's. Current plan: install Audi 5000 hydraulic mounts, replace cross piece on carrier with 2" x 1/4" plate to gain ground clearance.
My apologies for not searching here thoroughly, but....
Weight, vibration etc. in mind, which is less prone to cracking: Hot or cold rolled plate? Or does it make any difference? Am thinking of using cold rolled 1018 steel but am open to suggestions. Of note, if I can "spot" anneal the plate with my small propane torch, I may bend and overlap it along arms of the carrier.
Arms are 3/16", 2" box.
Hopefully my 110 AC MIG (Hobart "Handler") penetrate enough on 1st pass! (plate will have 45˚ bevels at edges)
Much TIA,
Neil.
