Van insurance and oxy propane cutting gear.

Hi guys

Do any of you have experience with van or pick up insurance and oxypropane cutting gear dont want a huge set as it be a pain too lug in and out of the pickup. But my insurance says im limited to 30l of gas in the vehicle now by that im assuming the water volume of the gas cylinders or is it actually 30ltrs in which case i think a plumbers soldering torch is all i could have. Do you guys know of any specific insurers that cover you for having gas cutting equipment in your vehicle.

I am with Axa for all my commercial stuff and as i declare hot roofing works including carriage of propane there is no limitations to how much i carry..i think you might need to shop around and dig out there stipulations...Unless Scotland has different gas carriage laws

Thanks for that i will, thats a point though would i have too put the gas stickers on the back if i have it in the pickup.

I use NFU. Really good service, local office in town too. They arent the cheapest but to a point you get what you pay for, although its the lesser of the bad when it comes to insurers I think.

I have good in transit insurance for mine and customers articles, ie if i pick something up to take back to my workshop and repair, then its covered. They also arent concerned about the Oxy setup, as long as its compliant with regs. Which is a loose thing they could wriggle out of but in the day to day it satisfies the requirement.

Worth an ask

Right thats a bit of a nussiance as i kind of was hoping there wouldnt be a need for that as i dont particularly want too advertise there may be valuable tools in the back, legally speaking would something like a magnetic L plate be ok too slap on the back when its actually in the pickup. Vehicle wont be sign written as it is also my personal car.

Legally speaking youre spot on. you arent supposed to display the sign when the gas isnt onboard, which is why HGVs have those folding sign things on the front of the tractor unit. I have never heard of anyone being had for displaying when not needed but the point is that yes you can satisfy the law with a temporary sign.

The insurance thing is handy. I dont really carry much of anyone elses very often but its useful to have. I had a heat exchanger in there today, was a few grands worth. NFU insist on it if you say you carry other peoples stuff.

edit: Tried to find the regs that I looked at when I went through all this with my truck. HSE have a massive thing on their site which takes ages to wade through. Found this: https://www.hibiscus-plc.co.uk/hazardous-goods-labels-vans/ which is the same info but from a private company. Worth checking but sounds about the same as the info i found out

I use a magnetic one when i go and pick up bottles from Boc. They sell them in their shop.

The stickers give the emergency services what they are dealing with in the event of an accident...i carry full time so stickers stay on my van

Ah so if i read that correctly a couple of disposable plumbers propane bottels, a 10ltr bottle or oxygen and a couple of disposable argon bottles should not have the warning signs displayed as they come under the small load exemptions, but best practice means i should have a file with the material safety data sheets for all substances onboard in.

That's how I read it. I have that because I carry risk assessment and MSDS sheets anyway because sometimes i get asked for them.

Technically you should come under a small load, which means you're exempt but they don't objec to relevant signage as it aids emergency services but you should use the diamonds not the ADR signs as that causes confusion

That's how I read it and that's what I have in writing from NFU. Another plus for having a local office you can just call in on or email.
