Did you know in the cold war the russians still retained some valve equipment on their militry radios and radar,it turned out that in the event of a nuclear blast the valve could wistand the blast and the transistor got wiped out.
Hmmm, the dreaded EMP... purely theoretical, I don't think it was ever proven. Granted any equipment in close enough contact with the blast could have induced voltages in excess of the component ratings, but to be fair if you were that close to the blast you probably wouldn't be reaching for your transistor equivalents book afterwards...
