I was given this the other day at a Crime prevention meeting.
The National Register helps Police identify the owners of any registered Stolen property.
By registering items it helps Police trace the rightful owners of Valuable items.
Maybe worth registering any Items of Value you have and in the run up to Xmas and the dark nights is a time of year Burglers love.

IMO a waste of time, if the stolen goods are taken out of the area, and found in another forces area, you will never get the stuff back.

Have you ever tried to get two forces to communicate with each other.

You only have to visit a lost property auction held by the police to see the stolen goods that have been recovered to sit in a store awaiting the next auction.

I tend to agree, I once saw the recovered property store at my local nick and the stuff there was out of this world, Tv's, computers, phones etc etc, even some fantastic antiques, some if not most of it had bound tohave been reported stolen but was still sitting unreturned and unclaimed.

verry true there not interested in getting your property back to u ,as said its auctioned off all there interested in is getting good crime rate figures up and solved. in fact 8 years ago a local copper pinched a cental heating boiler from the lost property room and fitted it in his girlfrends house and she worked for the crown prosecution office . he got a bollocking and it was swept under the carpet

Not sure if this works BUT if anyone has a few expensive items you could fit a tracker so that it would report when it was being stolen and you could locate it immediately. You can get them cheap now but for 60 quid you can get quality reliable ones that will last a month on battery and 6 months in deep sleep mode. Electrical items could have false electronic boxes that sent out a signal as its fired up....

One that annoyed me was a digital camera I picked up in the gutter outside a restaurant. Took it over the road into the nick and filled out all the paperwork and the officer told me I couldn't claim it and it would be destroyed if not claimed due to data protection. Wedding photos on it too.

More chance of getting it to its rightful owner by putting it on Facebook rather than leaving it with the cops.

The problem with using an old mobile is the data charges. I tried it but the data had to be topped up every month unlike the calls which could be carried over 6 months. All the apps like where's my droid need a data connection and other apps also use up the data.
Works out cheaper to use the tracking devices available nowadays. Cheap tracking system for your car.

It could be.....but the chargers are usually wall mounted so makes it harder to run a power supply. They also have deep sleep and shock modes. Plus checks etc. very sophisticated but simple plug and play for the average user.

A few years ago I ventured into my front garden to find a battery charger come booster starter had grown there over night, it looked like a valuable bit of kit so thinking it might have fell out of the owners car and bounced over my garden wall undamaged I decided to hand it in to local plod, was told we will keep it for so many months if not claimed its yours. I made an enquiry many months later out of curiosity to be told there was no record of it . I now wonder if some dishonest person has claimed it.LOL

I read in the times several months ago something about someone finding a fist of money in the street & as result I understand that you don't have to take it to the police station either.
All you have to do is make a reasonable attempt commensurate with the value of the item /goods to try and get it back to the rightful owner , if it would cost you more close to the value of the goods to do that , then there are other legal alternatives .

Such as ..a simple note in a local shop window dated & photographed in the shop display should suffice so long as you give avague but basic description.
like , " Battery drill found along xxx streeet /road , please contact email, " xxx @ bfoct.com " etc. You also need to state if not claimed within so many ( 42 ?) days the you reserve the right to dispose of it as you see fit. Obviously you do not give any enquirer any of the details of the goods when / if they contact you. You ask for as much /many identifying details as you can .

I got the impression that it also applied to anything else you find and so long as you have the photographic proofs of your reasonable attempt to repatriate the item your in the clear.
However I get the sinking feeling it might only apply to items of less than a certain value or only unlicenceable legal to hold things only & if you keep finding too many things or lots of brand new thing still inthe acking boxes you may be asked to attend an interview with Mr Plodd..
