Hi Guys, need some advice please. I'm rebuilding an old Kit car It's nothing special just a hobby which I enjoy as and when time and a limited budget allow.
Most of the mechanical side of things are now sorted but a modified engine and some larger carbs have meant that I have had to form an aperture in the side panel / wing to enable me to fit the carbs and pancake air filters.
I now need to sort out the paintwork and have taken the opportunity to address some problems with the original finish at the same time (dash/ scuttle was two different colours).
The wings are fibreglass the remaining panels are aluminium, the car is painted with cellulose paint and it has definitely been resprayed once before. I have started to prep the areas needing attention and have so far done my initial metal shaping, filling and have sanded the whole lot down with 180 grade wet and dry.
I now have a multitude of different surfaces these being bare aluminium, original primer, original colour, what I think is hi build primer and the resprayed top coat.
This is where I am stuck, I need to refinish in cellulose I do not have the equipment or skills required to use 2 Pack so have formulated the following game plan following information that I have read on this forum.
1. Refill and address any low spots,
2. Sand down again with 320 grade wet and dry used wet
3. Dust coat etch primer (aerosol type) over bare aluminium
4. 3 coats of hi build primer
5. wet sand down with 600 grade wet and dry, using a guide coat
6. 4 coats of cellulose colour
7. Wet sand with 1500 grade wet and dry to get rid of all the orange peel my poor technique will produce.
8. Buff the hell out of it with G3 and a polisher.
Is this about right? if not how should I go about it ?, please remember this is to be done with limited finance in a home garage. I have attached some photos and thank you in advance for any help or advice.
Regards Norm
