Using a generator to power a welder, advice needed please

Hi

I have been asked to weld some 2mm steel tube to an existing frame work which is of similar dimensions. This framework is outside and no where near a power source, so the only option appears to be to use a generator. I have access to a 3.3kva generator, but would this be powerful enough to run the welder at the correct power. I have a portamig 185 welder.

the only advice is to try the welder on the generator on the same thickness steel and see if you get penetration, if i had to say yes or no my answer would be no it wont run it with any success but worth a try anyway

it will be a guaranteed no trying to use the welder anywhere near full power

I would say 3.3kVa isn't big enough. A 5kVa generator at least. There are other posts on this forum dealing with this topic. Try putting "generator" in the search box.

as above, nearer 5kva will be needed,
i use an inverter stick welder for mobile jobs in parks etc,
a 4kva barely gives out 70-80amps welding output although on a mig that may be different?

nope ive used a 5kva on a mig trying for high amps and it didnt want to know

Had a job today to weld some gates in a school playground,
hate going down the generator route as we always need to hire them,
always a lottery on the condition and output so ran out 100metres, yeehaa!!!
of extension cable,
burning 2.5mm arc rods, seemed to work fine with very little power drop

i think if you try a genny with an avr and try to pull huge amps through (inrush) it just blows the avr

Ok, thanks for the replys everyone. Looks like I need to do a bit of research and maybe bring the genny home to try first, and then get a larger one for the day.
