Used veg oil...scarce ?

I used to run a 2.8TD Shogun on WVO and its was brilliant even up 95% with 5% petrol and covered over 10k miles. It was a while back now and i had a couple of good suppliers average was 20ppl. I am now running a Mazda 2.5TD Bongo and fancy doing it again and see how it goes.

But my god its hard to come by now, a few places sell WVO around 70ppl which isnt bad towards diesel. Trying to find it though is not easy.

Anybody else found the same up around Manchester or have all the greedy businesses buying it all up to convert to Bio ?

Its the paper trail, companies have to send waste products off to licensed recyclers. I would have thought the only place you would get this gear now is a small one man band chippy.

They cant have ever had an audit Julian, they should know where their waste products are going and how they are being dealt with. A scribble on a waste transfer ticket wont cut it these days. Not saying that you are doing anything wrong but they are supposed to know you are doing things properly.

Its always been like this when you first start looking for it. All seems tied up - because most producers have to have had their outlet sorted BEFORE you turn up. You just have to catch the ones that are between collectors, for whatever reason - which is, clearly, statistically, way less common than those who have been producing waste oil for a while, so therefore, have had to get sorted before you rock up on their doorstep.

Im about to don the head torch right now and go and shift some veg about. This lot was a tiny pickup from a fancy french restaurant thats local and happens to know me. They call me once in a blue moon.

But i have other regular collections - the site that i mentioned to bob above ive been servicing for, probably, about 10 years. I pay them a nominal amount (normally about 10 or 12ppl) but, really, they are just interested in it being gone, and the correct paperwork.

I suspect its probably actually easier than it was years ago, as youre only really competing with the commercial sorts - non commercial are few and far between now, due, mostly, to DPF regen cycles being fussy on methylesters.



Our central heating is on here now. Thats running off biodiesel. The garage boiler has been on as im in there tomorrow - again, bio. I was out driving about today in the defender - bio. But my partners fl2 has a dpf, and its not really worth chancing it for the miles she does in it.

They know where the waste is going. My full name and address are on the transfer ticket, as is what im up to with it. Its all clearly filled in. Its entirely traceable and above board.

Years ago, i had environmental health round here, as one of my neighbors thought they were cleverer than they were. So im on their book with a "tick" by my name also.

As i say, ive even been recommended to people by the council.

indeed, there have been times with the above plant (which, as mentioned, ive serviced for about a decade) when theyve called me in a rush, as theyve got "whoever" round and they want the stored waste gone in a rush - so i assume its not as if noone has looked at them for a decade.

I threw in the towel about 8years ago. I was collecting around 200lts a month so nothing crazy, from 3 suppliers. Had the paperwork for them, paid, showed up allways on time, polite, left the place clean and tidy and one by one they dropped me when their oil suppliers requested the old oil back.

If anything it's a bit easier than a few years ago I'd say. As others have said the best cars for wvo are now heading towards classic status or atleast old car niche. I guess there'll be some bio home brewers around but wvo users are rare now.

Keep at it, make it clear that you can offer a personal service and collect smaller quantities than the likes of olleco. It's also perfectly legal and above board if you store it sensibly and use it for personal use.
I've always found it's good to get to know local chefs. They often work in multiple joints and if you know them, they'll get you lined up for wvo.
There's a few nice neat waste transfer note templates , the biopowered one is good as it has a season ticket option.

You might find it's best to go to out of the way places and smaller users. The oil can be cleaner, cheaper and it's not worth ollecos effort and as a result they can struggle to get rid of it.

Was going to make the same comment. Before the war in Ukraine, veg oil on a Tesco deal was 70ppl. It was around half the price of diesel. I ran my 200tdi on it. Tens of thousands of miles. It would run on it at 100% - no diesel or petrol in the summer. I'd go 50:50 with diesel for long runs in the winter and only fill with diesel for short trips.

There's a few suppliers of it here in its refined state. I see their tankers out and about so suspect that they are sourcing most of the 'raw' material.

I tried new veg oil once, just a few litres really in my 1999 Renualt Laguna 1.9TD. French rubbish. Lasted less than a week before the gearbox threw the reverse shaft bearing, so I will never know if it does any harm.

That was 55p/L in 2009/10'ish, only a 3L bottle so I guess in a drum it would be a lot less. It was my last car before I tried motorbikes and did my bike tests 2010/2011.
Soon after, I noticed the price up at £1/L or more, it was not much cheaper than diesel!
The cause was the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), I believe.

What made it easier for.me.was that i supplied restaurants with drinks.gas. I could get 200l plus a month. Now it's harder to get in there as I no longer go out to places to even eat or drink lol.
I used.to know a couple chaps that would.sell.it on. Even there not in it now. They said due to the commercial.lot uyimg it all.up.
Used to fomd it on ebay even. Not much now.

I guess then its getting in there with places as.you say and once you know them.chefs erc then see.if they will sell it you.

No. Up until 2020 it was 70ppl or less. I know this as I was still pouring it in my land rover then and wouldnt buy it if it was much more as not worth the hassle if the price difference with diesel was much less. I took the LR off the road for a chassis change mid 2020 but kept an idle eye on SVO proces when in the shop. Initially the big 5l tubs dissappeared and then shot up in price with the Ukraine war as much of it came from there.
