UPVC door hung screws stripped

One of our doors was proving difficult to close. A quick look revealed the top hinge screws into the door had come loose and the hinge wasn't touching the door. Simple job to tighten them up, or so I thought... I was very gentle but three of the four screws wouldn't tighten and felt stripped. One nipped up tight. I tried slightly longer, thicker screws but no joy.

Is there a way to repair this? I don't know what the screws bite into.

It's this type of hinge and it's the screws into the door, not the door frame that have stripped.

If you do not know the material and have not shown us the type of screw (self-tapping coarse thread, self-tapping fine thread or machine screw thread), it would be difficult to advise.

Can you use larger screws of the appropriate type? How does the hinge fit to the frame? Can you relocate it half a screw spacing upwards or downwards? Can you put a thin steel plate under it, which is screwed into good frame material and then screw the hinge to that plate?

Presumably your looking at moving the hinge at least a screw hole, up or down, that's going to mean moving frame side too.

Could be a cheap door and it's only into plastic, cavity rivets the kind that split may work.

Worst case, remove glass or panel, cut through to see what's going on, put thin plates in, fix hinge, bodge hole, re fit panel or glass.

Perhaps a bodge but you could fill the stripped holes with epoxy, let dry and drill pilot hole. Should give the screws something to bite into.

The difficulty is you'd want a thicker epoxy thats not going to run down the inside of the frame, quite likely to be hollow perhaps with a thin metal frame.

Similar idea but use the screw itself to form a thread in the epoxy.

There is an epoxy putty that is like a bi-coloured sausage that you kneed to a uniform colour. That might be solid enough not to droop.

Some of the cavity wall resin anchors have a mesh sleeve that goes into the hole to contain the gunge, so that could give some food for thought.

Yes there is putty but I imagine it will be somewhat too solid and difficult to get much through the existing screw holes unless they were drilled larger, which I would avoid if possible.

if threaded bolts could you use nutserts?

Is it a metal framed PVC door? if so, you may be able to get get some long self drilling screws that go through the box to the other side. Whip the window out first though as you dont want to go through it!!
