Unwelcome visitor

Apparently we had an unwelcome visitor while we were at work today eyeing up the remains of my Disco and some other stuff in the garden. Anyone used one or similar or have any recommendations? I'll have a look at the user guide later this evening to see how it connects up as I want it to be relatively quick and (very) simple!

A camera wont deter them, its just one more thing for them to destroy, if you put it on show they knock it off the wall and smash it, and if you hide it or put it behind a window unless you get a good shot of their face theres nothing to go on.

u need a decent set up day and night cameras good quality and a dvr and screen . a good setup with 4 cameras will cost u about £600 to 700 quid . i fit them quite often for a living i also have infrared beams across my drive without all the gear there not efective cameras cant see though a balaclava and u need an audible device to warn u of trespassers so u can take action

The break-in was done by a specialist, according to the Police - attending officer was my cousin, they were only after jewellery.

The scum that are after scrap and what they can pinch are known in the area and very brazen about it. I've even had them come up the drive and look about when I've been in the garden. I'm in a corner property so it is all but impossible to secure from both sides, this is just another not too expensive deterrent that will hopefully keep the other half happy.

It's a sorry state that the country is coming to.

This is the problem with CCTV, if the perps faces are covered there is no evidence for any action to be taken, or even for the Police to get off their fat mountain passes to investigate ! An alarm of some sort may deter them, but if causes too many false alerts and neighbours object to it, the Police will insist that it be rectified or deactivated !
Basically we can't protect our own home and property effectively without being at risk of prosecution ourselves !

Yes, I guess it might come to that. Pity you aren't a bit closer...
I like the idea of a warning buzzer or similar but to be honest I'm not sure that will bother them. I guess I'll have to take a trip to the local scrapyard so theres nothing to pinch.

We installed an anti piracy sonic boom speaker on the Queen Victoria cruise liner a few years back, ill see if i can pick another one up!

I have a swann cctv system clicky, about £200 from maplin with 2 cameras, its a 4 channel system and you can buy extra cameras fairly cheap try, Henry's http://www.cctv-centre.co.uk/.
With 4 cameras on motion detect its currently holding about 4 months of recordings, It has a sounder and a flashing light on the dvr to alert you to movement, 2 outputs for TV's and 1 for a pc monitor, and can be hooked up to your router for remote monitoring on a smart phone.

i get them from dynamic cctv at middlesbrough there catalogues on google and gives u all the specs and types

personally having caught a couple of thiefing scrotes redhanded in me time i'm a big fan of GSM silent alarms the ones that ring yer mobile in an alarm condition but are silent in the house,office or yard.
if you answer the call you can listen in to the scum at work.
i have mine linked to CCTV
If you couple em to pet proof PIR motion detectors they work great outside to.
cheap as chips these days £100-£130 quid or so just add sim card.
e-bay take yer pick.

i have an old compaq pc in my garage its a p4 1800 cpu , 1g ram 200gb harddrive i fitted pci dvr card for £25. two cctv camera £57 each and two 10m cables £5 each it has been running for three years + now total £150.00

What about a smartwater system, intruders are "tagged" for weeks and all police stations check for it.

Cheaper option would be to "paint" everything of value with it.

Thanks all, your help and support is appreciated. Had to go out tonight so didn't get chance to look further.
SWMBO was a bit twitchy when I told her about the visitor but is ok now as she has "met" one of the likley culprits and explained the facts of life to him.
R5, we can get some of that smartwater and I'll mark the Disco bits, they won't be expecting that, and let the local Plods know if any is lifted.
What really gets me is that this stuff isn't near the road and cannot be seen from there, but since a 6 cylinder Triumph block "went" they keep coming back and looking for anything that's going and unless they are caught red handed nothing can be done.
Off to the cot now......
