Unusual bench drill?

The motor and switch gear has been partly dismantled. The machine is ridiculously heavy, and although it looks like the head can be raised an inch or two, there would be very little room for the workpiece once a drill bit is in the chuck. Seems to be a flat belt drive. The widow of the owner asked me what to do with it. Because of the weight, and it being on a Scottish island it, I suggested selling for scrap. What do you think?

Too good to scrap that should easily last for another 500 years, no one locally want it?

Unless you or the widow can afford the time or hassle, scrap it or give it away for free. If you sell it you probably won't get more than £50. Sad, I know.

We had some similar machines for drilling pcbs, all got dumped, as said massive construction vvv heavy ,

It's a "sensitive drill."
High speed, as has already been mentioned. I used to own a Jones & Shipman one many years ago.

Too good to scrap.

Hello. I've just had a look at the map. I'm closer to you than I am to him, as the crow flies.

Do crows always fly in straight lines and is that in two or three dimensions? How far can they fly in one go (It wouldn't be a swoop as that wouldn't be a straight line). Can this behaviour be applied to all corvids?

Thanks for replies. Interesting to know what it is. Shame its not working - as it is, I dont think anyone locally would be interested. It will be interesting getting it out of the shed, I can barely get it to rock on the table! The owner was a retired marine engineer who apart from mending and fixing stuff on the island, made very detailed model ships and trams as a hobby. The ships were I think some of the ones he'd served on in his earlier life.

I have a slightly more modern heavy built high speed drill. Bought as a badly listed unknown condition eBay listing. After fettling and realising its very high speed, I initially thought to sell it on. But it's a delight to use. I keep it on "slow" with a 4or 5mm bit in and use for pilot holes. Something about the stiffness and speed makes drilling with it a pleasure. And occasionally have a call to do tiny stuff.

I know stuff gets abandoned on islands - shipping just kills things. And import costs encourage hoarding. Scrapping is better than letting it rust in the garden. But if that's the option you're leaning towards, offer it for scrap money wherever is appropriate and see if there are any takers?

I'm potentially interested in it and depending on which Scottish Island it is on I might have some friends that might be able to assist in getting it to the mainland.

Emailed Tony at lathes.co.uk and he says it’s a J&S high speed sensitive. Top speed from 6000-22,000 rpm, built to last forever.
