unknown stainless

Is 309 filler an okay rod for unknown stainless to unknown stainless?or 312?
exhausts and simple bracketry etc nothing high risk.i want to buy some .045 filler for thinner stuff and ordering it once would be nice

Given the application won't be a problem. I've used 312 filler on lots of grades with no issues. In fact if the exhaust is 400 series stainless then 312,309 is the correct filler. I stand to be corrected on that though

312 is higher strength higher ferrite content lower ductility than 309. I wouldn't say it's generally any more suitable than 309 on mystery stainless but it's certainly more suitable if the application is strength critical which it doesn't sound like you need.
