UNIMIG 240 vs WELDSMART 135

Hi all,

Im looking to buy my very first welder. Ill be using it for auto body repair. Iv been reading up as much as i can about mig welders for a while now but still cant decide between two migs. A unimig 240 and a weldsmart 135. Iv chosen the unimig 240 as i can get one quite easily second hand for half the retail, it seems to tick the boxes spec wise for what i need it for and its a well known brand, and the weldsmart 135 as iv heard inverters have cleaner welds, less splatter, are lighter, are more reliable (although i have heard people say the opposite) and not too mention that this one seems like a good price for an inverter.

Now unimig is a well known tried and trusted brand but i havnt heard much about weldsmart? If both where exactly the same price which one would you go for and why? Remember im only using it for auto body repair and will be running it off a generator.

That weldsmart is a generic Chinese multi-function machine, personally I'd avoid it like the plague but that's up to you.
The unimig looks good on paper but you'll need a hefty generator to run it.

Thanks woz yeah i was a bit iffy about the weldsmart aswell. One of the things i did like about it though was its low end welding current of 25A as opposed to 30 with the unimig.

Is 30A do much for thin auto panel repair?

30A should not cause any issues for car body panels etc,unimig looks good on paper if buying 2nd hand ,insist on a demo on thin plate to see how it welds ...
