I gave up on the little insert in the end of the pipe. May still have one somewhere if you're desperate.
Instead, I just use a length of plastic pipe, bare end. Work the trigger with left hand and wave about with the right. Applied liberally in channels it seems to cover fine.
My favored mix is 1part waxoyl (clear usually) 1 part fresh bitumen and enough white spirit to get it a tad thinner ~1/2 part normally. Heated too.
Waxoyl is pretty expensive for what it is and bitumen is cheap.
Do this at your own risk. I have helped the dregs out of a can with a heat gun before but one day, while extremely tired, I stupidly used a blow lamp. To my peril.
The volatile vapours ignited, sending out a fireball and blowing the can out of my hand and huffing molten, ignited waxoyl all over the untidy workshop and my face where it proceeded to happy start multiple small fires on the various objects nearby.
Luckily the stuff burns pretty slowly (including in a smokey fireball) so I had time to shut my eyes. And nothing was actually that hot so while I had a few minor burns, I was quite able to wet the face and fight the small fires in good time.
Now I heat it up with warm water.
