if you have the car mot test done in france is it legal to use over here

I've know someone drive from London to Derbyshire in a Lada which was unroad worthy with an MOT booked...then the dodgy MOT station passed it!! Now I love a lada riva/nivas but it was a dangerous beast to drive as I unfortunately had to a week or so later.

yes as far as i know but your insurance has to be on the MID database in the uk or its not valid
But having an MOT booked in such circumstances wouldn't have done him much good if he'd been stopped or involved in an accident.
What you are describing is luck. You can imagine someone driving the worst wreck imaginable from Land's End to John O'Groats and back, trailing sparks and smoke, five bald tyres, dangerous moving parts exposed, no insurance, driving while banned, the whole scene. If they weren't stopped, weren't involved in an accident and weren't reported, they'd get away with it.
On the other hand you can see someone driving a car with a SORN document to an MOT station with a reasonable expectation of it passing, who happens to come across a particularly difficult copper and has the book thrown at him.
In general the world doesn't work as in either of these cases. The police like clear cases and no one with any sense is going to present an obvious deathtrap for an MOT.

eventually as A N P R cameras become more wide spread and commonly used more people will be stopped on the way to and from mot
l got stopped on my way to an mot last year, drove through an anpr camera and all hell broke loose, motorcycle police appeared in my rearview mirror pulled me over and led me to a carpark where they were conducting an operation, they thought it was their lucky day as the vitara hadent been on the road for 4 years as the old tax clearly showed, luckily it was booked in at a garage and l had insured it the day before, all they did was to check it was insured and ring the garage to check it booked in, they wished me luck for the mot and sent me on my way, dident ask where l lived or if there was a nearer garage or which route l was taking, intrestingly on the way back l went the same route and drove through the camera again and they ignored me so either the mot result goes on the data base instantly and the camera knows this ( still untaxed though) or the camera dosent work head on ?? l often wonder what happens if you transport an untaxed car on a trailer past an unmanned anpr camera, does someone look at the pics and take out such cases ??

Many years ago I was done. The MOT had expired, I was genuinely driving to a pre-booked MOT, but on the way stopped at the cash machine to get to money for the test. (same road no diversion) I was done while parked!

If this took you off your direct route they were forcing you to break the law - sue them!!!
Heard that a lot of vintage bike lads who trailer bikes to shows have had bother with their number plates getting picked up by anpr cameras.

Have a look at used cars being transported on car transporters. The number plates wiill have black tape over them. That's why.
The exemption for driving without a valid MOT and/or road rent to and from an MOT is made in the motor vehicle test regulations (link is to google hits on the relevant section as i failed to find an official link that didn't involve trawling through entire sections of the regulations). No mention is made of distance.
Surely it's a common sense thing like for example using a test centre 20 odd miles away because the garage at the end of the road is booked up and can't test it for a week should be reasonable to even the spottiest of jumped up little jobsworths. Passing the local kwikfit in a kit/special/vintage to get it tested at a garage that specialises in such a car would also reasonable to most. Booking the MOT at a centre half way across the country on the other hand... gonna have a hard time justifying that one if pushed
[pedantic] Insurance companies can't void policies after the fact to avoid paying out. They are bound by the Road traffic act to pay 3rd party damages. Fairly obviously if a barried up corsa takes out a bus stop full of people and it comes to light that insurance fronting took place they'll be coming for you through the courts to recover what they can. On the other hand if a set of aftermarket wheels were to be discovered by a claims assesser after a knock it's possible that the policy holder would simply be asked to stump up the extra to reflect the change in risk the wheels made [pedantic/]
