Un SORN a car and MOT it ?

I have a Fiesta on the driveway that is SORN'd. If i want to get it back on the road how would i go about getting it to the MOT station without paying to get it trailered there? Obviously although i can insure it I cant tax it till the MOT is passed. Is there any sort of allowance for driving a un taxed car straight to the testing station (he asks hopefully ?)

Yes, insure & drive it. MOT has to be pre-booked.

Hi, If you tell the garage the registration number when you book the MOT they will make a note of it. This covers you to travel to the garage and back home afterwards.
Make sure the garage is aware the MOT has run out.

As long as its booked into an mot station and you have insurance i think its legal...

As long as it is insured and you have pre-booked your appointment (make sure it is down in their diary) at the MOT garage, you are allowed to drive it to and from the test station, with no diversions to a holiday destination

Odly enough, the test station does not need to be the closest to home. It could theoretically be at the other end of the country.

I sold an untaxed MOT failure to a guy who lived about 100 miles away, he just booked it in for a test near to where he lived and took out a 1 day insurance policy and drove it home.

while all the above is true you can still be done for driving an unfit motor vehicle on public road when returning from an MOT if it has failed

MK's point is a good one, the law says you can drive an MOT failure home and it also says you can't drive an unroadworthy car!

i dont doubt you for a minute mate. but the MOT got nothing at all to do with the DVLA. VOSA are the kiddies. the dvla wont know **** from clay.

the law states that it must be an appropriate garage (i.e. an MOT station obviously) and is explained in law as local

therefore, by driving 100 miles you would pass at least 20 mot stations. you would never get away with it.

people who have tried to pull a fast one have gone to court thinking they are brill and duely lost the case.

you must also take the most direct route.

you can drive a failure home unless the mot tester has filled in the part of the failure sheet that says something like

in my opinion the car is unfit to be driven on a public highway

"Even in the above circumstances" (ie booked test, driving home after a fail, no prohibition issued) "you may still be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle if it does not comply with various Regulations affecting its construction and use. Additionally the insurance may not be valid."

I suppose the mathematical odds of being stopped under those circumstances are pretty low, and then you'd have to get a particularly nasty copper to get nicked.

I have heard that an MOT station will tell the Police if someone drives off under a prohibition notice.

i think people must know when a car is that bad that it shouldnt be driven i had a failure come in once where a brake pipe on a taxi burst in the middle of the test no prohibition was served or anything like, most testers are ok knowing there is a dual braking system on most cars

Pretty well. I think it's one of those areas where you can't define the law that precisely and it relies on the idea of everyone being reasonable. Otherwise you'd have to trailer any car without an MOT to an MOT station and there'd be all sorts of complications.The MOT can come down to someone's judgement.

If you were driving a car with caravan back home on a rainy night and a headlamp bulb blew you wouldn't really be expected to pull the car and caravan over immediately and not go back on the road until the bulb was replaced. It might easily be more dangerous to do that than drive on one headlight. Would this apply to royal limousines, police cars, politician's cars, army vehicles?

A headlamp bulb can blow at any time and a car with a blown headlamp wouldn't (shouldn't) pass an MOT. Is a car with a blown headlamp unroadworthy? Certainly, no one with any sense would want to drive a car with one headlamp longer than they had to.
