Umm Alter

Hi - for the last 18 months I have been looking for an Umm Alter. The few that have turned up have sold before I found out.

Has anyone on here actually owned one and if yes what was it like? Just interested on what you thought.

For those that dont know, the are a Portuguese built 4x4 from a French design using Peugeot 505 mechanicals and parts bin for the rest.

Had The earlier Transcat bit like Marmite a lot of good things,but very poor support from importers, the BW designed gear box was of off road but did not like road work there were a few mods that helped but still not that special, wipers , steering to low geared to suit me basic & rugged in soft going it would eat a LR.a hose would clean inside & out

Yes, the web page has nearly died. The fb group much more active now. Dont think I could put up with a Transcat and the low power!

A no frills 4x4, the local council ran these for a few years. Ticks a lot of boxes for some folk,what`s not to like

I like the look of them, though perhaps not surprising as I am a Landrover fan.

Yep - I've got a Transcat Off the road at present as want to do some jobs to bodywork. Chassis is massive. Bodywork is 2mm thick steel ! Only problem, especially with mine, is where panels join there was no seam sealer so despite thickness of metal the seams have rusted. Easy repairs though. I'm thinking of getting a late, but very rusty, Alter as a parts donor for the disc braked front axle, power steering, 5 speed gearbox and 2.5 turbo engine.
If you google UMM TRANSCAT mine is the red one reg D996JKM. Transcat's are a lot rarer than the Alter model.
BTW I pay around £90 a year fully comp insurance for any driver over 25 but limited to 3000 miles with NFU
