Ultrasonic cleaner, home made fluid?

I have a fair amount of bronze and brass bits to make shiny, what do people make the fluid out of? TFR and water I was thinking, someone on youtube says water and vinegar, any magic tips chaps? The genuine stuff is a crazy price.

water, vinegar and salt is good for copper... maybe good for brass too?

will TFR not foam up?

I use 20% IPA to 80% water with a good squirt of washing up liquid per litre, is does not foam up and the IPA as well as dissolving grease leaves the item dry in a few minutes once you take it out.

100% ipa for me... but im usually more interested in degreasing

I've always wondered how the proper stuff compares to a squirt of dishsoap, there must be a reason people buy it.

I usually use Muc-off bike cleaner and water, just because I usually have it handy, but things like bearings I'll stand a pyrex beaker of IPA or acetone in the water and put them in the beaker. G101 is good too.

Proper industrial detergents - night and day compared to domestic stuff - adjust the chemistry to get exactly the cleaning, drying and flash rusting protection you need. But its not as cheap as a litre of washing up liquid.

And it seems to last - when we shut down, I "rescued" a couple of 25ltr drums of spray wash detergent and tank detergent - it still seems to work well 16 yrs later.

An overnight soak in apple cider vinegar is what we used on salvaged brass and turnbuckles liberated from Davy Jones locker.

Well spotted It's a Taylors 028 paraffin cooker, quite an old one, made in Maldon. I used it for 5 years on board, now I'm going to shine it up and sell it. Fed up with faffing about cleaning sooty burners etc..

Diluted limonene is hard to beat.
I put flammable liquids in a plastic bag and suspend in whatever waterbased stuff is currently in the tank.

I'd stay away from chloride, which is a corrosion initiator. Don't know what TRF is.
IPA should be beneficial. Vinegar may help but may cause slight etching of brass (dissolving the zinc content preferentially) but only to a slight extent which can be polished out. As for the commercial cleaners being expensive, well you only use them at low concentrations, so the good ones probably offer value for money (if you value your own time at £x/hour, for the time will spend mucking about with homebrew).
