UK gets new Department of Science, Innovation and Technology.

Something that got little news coverage this week is that the Government has created a new Department of Science, Innovation and Technology. For the last ~30 years these areas had just been bundled in with the Department of Business. Sounds like good news !?! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-64589917

So, the new Minister will have a seat in the cabinet and who is the new Minister, well it is the 38 year old Michelle Donelan who, according to Wiki has a degree in science engineering History and Politics from York. Wiki says that Ms Donelan decided she wanted to go in to politics when she was just 6 years old and addressed a Conservative party conference when she was just 15.

There are days now when I suspect that I've actually died peacefully in my sleep and that I am now in Hell – and this is one of them!

No, I think that a Department has far more power than any quango. They will be deciding what areas gets serious funding and what gets ignored. For example, this was announced yesterday;

Space scientists and engineers at the University of Surrey have won £400,000 worth of funding from the UK Space Agency (UKSA).
With a collective income of over £3bn, the money will boost the local space industry in Surrey and Hampshire.

Now, that is not mega-money, but money in to Surrey and Hampshire is not exactly "Levelling up".
