I need to replace the front tyres on my Renault Trafic, most of my mileage is on tarmac roads but weekly I need to drive up a muddy/rocky track and then down and up a grass field. I have a set of snow chains if things go pear shaped but I want some dual purpose tyres if possible. Any recommendations?

avoid all terrain, they seem to be crap on road and barely adequate off road. Decent set of mud and snow as suggested, work well on road tok

well i would recomend all terains.. they will be good on road and offroad a little. and a good set should last quite a few miles, ive had a set that lasts over 50k miles..
where as mud tyres will wear down fast and not be very good onroad.. as they are designed for offroad

agree size plays a big part.. but alot of offroad at's and muds will have a good rating.. mine are 1400kg per tyre..

find a tyre thats got a well chunky tread pattern in the budget tyre range, one with the tread that looks like blocks, not the ones with the two groves around them and little slits acting as a tread, never got stuck in snow or on fields when i went metal detecting when i had time,

A pretty poor, miss-informed comment. Modern All terrain tyres have excellent road going and off-road properties. I have run several vehicles with various makes of all terrain tyre: BF Goodrich;General;Goodyear;Pirrelli and Continental. All provided good road handling and coped with most off-road situations - rough tracks, grassy fields and a decent amount of mud.

The OP staed that he drove once weekly on a rough track/grassy slope with the remainder of his driving on tarmac (although most roads these days could be considered rough due to the amount of potholes!) so all terrain tyres seem to be a good compromise for his needs. Mud tyres will be fairly poor in wet tarmac, relatively noisy and wear down pretty quick on tarmac.

I had a set of AT's on a Navara, lasted 42K never had any worries using them on road.
