Tyre sizes - help !

Help please !

I have a HiLux HL2 with Goodyear tyres - Wrangler AT/S which say 205 R16 C 110/108S and I'm trying to get some replacements on line.

I believe that 205 R16 is the same as 205 80 R16 (as there is no aspect ratio shown the default is 80).

However the dealer is telling me that they are 205 70 R16.

I measured the tyre diameter (albeit with a tape measure) and it is approx 720mm which is bigger than 70 aspect ratio which I think should be about 690mm.

Obviously as I'm buying them on t'internet there'll be no comebacks if I get the wrong size, so I'd appreciate any help you may be able to give !

You're correct, if there's no aspect ratio shown then they are 205/80-16 (205-16) not 205/70-16. The dealer should know that.

True ! My experience of car dealers is not good - to be honest these guys had been on the ball until this.

the depth of sidewall is a percentage of the width of the tyre so if the sidewall of your 205 is 80% the the sidewall should measure 164mm deep

Thats rite if there is no aspect ratio IE the 70 or the 45 part then they are standard 80 profile tyres

I run a tyre bay and I know that! Probably he meant the car dealer not the tyre dealer?

Yes mate the car dealer.

I thought 80 was right.

The car dealer (main Toyota) said the tyres were 70's and he had just fitted a set of 215/65's for somebody !

I will sort the tyres tomorrow.

Tyre bay should have a "drive Right" programme on computer. They can search you vehicle by reg number or make and model etc, this in most cases shows what size and rating of tyres it had as new and what is acceptable as alternatives. This also gives tyre pressures and wheel nut torque values

Has yor vehicle got a tyre data plate either on the A or B post's or inside the fuel filler flap That should give an indication of tyre sizes that would have been fitted at factory. Or look in handbook under tyres.

I have also used Sowden Tyres and found them good.

Although my wife was less than pleased to find five 7.50 R16s stacked in the front room when she got home from work.
