Two dead Alternator's in 5 years!

The other day I noticed the charge light come on,I was on my way to a job so just kept on. It started ok for the trip home but I thought I would check the voltage at high idle,11.4V.

I put this alternator on to replace the original Merc one that was 40 years old so fair enough..

Could there be another reason for this alternator to die so soon? Or was I just unlucky?

Looks a bit Mogish, a loose belt can fry an alternator by generating pulley heat which then travels up the shaft. Thats a pretty poor belt to pulley contact area, also seems a rather large pulley which in turm wont be spinning it at a sensible rate.

If you mean new aftermarket china unit then that is also part of the problem!

I suggest looking up alternator rebuilders near you and having your original alternator rebuilt.

There are lots of good alternator / starter rebuilders out there IMO.

I’ve rebuilt a couple with kits from gold lion autoelectrics on ebay (based in Ireland; not sure if they’re still there). They came with bearings, brushes, a length of solder and a new slip ring that you had to epoxy in place. Diodes were also available.

On the simpler Lucas ACR type ones, you can test the regulator by winding the voltage on the input up with a bench power supply, and checking power is cut to the brushes at around 14.4V

I think the windings were in delta, so while the diode pack was off I checked them for equal continuity and insulation resistance. If they’re cooked it’s pretty obvious.

I found a rebuilt one in Germany for €76. So I will grab that one

Ive always found cjf rotating auto electrics in the midlands pretty good. In house OE+ rebuilds and pretty quick turnaround and reasonable price.
