Iv had sky and sky+ for years mostly because the reception on terrestrial was naff, never had big packages just the Discovery channels, I feel its time to get rid of sky especially as amazon prime are doing discovery for a fiver a month with 90 days free zero subscription which is a lot less than the £40 for Murdock's pension fund.

The biggest question is though is what is the best way to replace the record facility I know most programs are stream able but BB speeds are less than ideal so still want to be able to put stuff straight on the Hard drive. also as I have a number of sets can any recorders sit central and broadcast to a closed network, I have all the incoming and outgoing feeds for everything in one point (terrestrial, quad LMB, Router(s), switches etc) and distributed accordingly

How about a Humax HDR1100s freesat reciever then HDMI splitter to several HDMI over cat 6 or maybe cat 5 if runs are short to each of your rooms.
There may be better solutions available.

Our LG can record to a USB or hard drive or watch internet based tv but the Humax is easier.

My Humax, admittedly getting old now as we've had it for 10 years, does suffer from the sound and picture going out of sinc on some channels when playing recorded programs. Usually after skipping the ads, Film 4 etc., does get annoying at times.

My Sony tv can record direct to an external hard drive but the user interface is rubbish, you can only record one channel & you cannot watch another channel.

I have tried different freeview recorders but the most reliable have been the Humax ones. I have 2 top-up tv/youview/btvision branded ones that are forced to use the freeview plus crappy software but humax hardware. Try to get a humax branded one that uses their own excellent software. There are some people that have swapped the internal hard drive for a larger one, there is a Humax forum with guides for this.

You can pick up the BTvision/youview boxes cheap second hand, they came free if you got a tv/phone package from BT & people sell them off. If you can put up with the user interface you get a 1 TB Humax pvr for buttons, I paid around £30 each for mine!
Just make sure that it's a Humax box, they did use Thomson boxes as well, they are rubbish by comparison!

If you want to customize your recorder you could go for a topfield pvr. You can access the software & change if to your preferences or use one of the many ones available online.
