TV aerial question.

Howdo chaps.

I'm trying to get the telly sorted in the wagon and have a small problem. I've bought an Omnimax aerial and a magnetic base but the co-ax has me baffled. The end that goes in the back of the telly is the normal push-in type but how does the other end work?

It screws on to the aerial cable and has a locknut to attach it to the aerial, but do you have to bare the outer sheath? I've screwed the fitting off the co-ax but I can only see the central copper core, no sign of the "outer".

The co-ax has "screened digital cable" printed on it, if that matters?

Sounds like you have an F connector. If you screwed the connector off the cable and there was no braid to be seen then it's not been fitted properly. The braid should be folded back onto the cable. But then again a screw on F connector without insulation is a pretty poor solution for an outdoor aerial.

Maybe the magnetic base is the screening?

Instructions for fitting are online. The F connector at the aerial end is covered from the elements but when you fit it use a bit of silicone grease to help it on the outer sheath. Cut the outer cover back about 15mm but be careful not to go through the braiding, cutting a bit of the shield which is like foil lining the cover is not too critical. Trim the braided bit and fold it back over the outer. Cut the foam cover of the centre core leaving 2 or 3mm more than the outer then apply a bit of the grease and screw the F connector down the outer trapping the braid you folded back. Keep going till it will not screw down any further then trim the centre core to the end of the connector or a bit proud. You can google how to fit F connector but everyone has their own ideas and if it works then all good.

Thanks all.

It is an "F" connector, and obviously hadn't been fitted correctly. By virtue of an incredibly rare 4.30 finish today, I'm parked-up near Middlesborough and I've sorted the aerial. I can now watch telly at night!

And apologies for a lack of photo's. There's only so much room in my cab so photo's have to be downloaded at weekends.
