Turbo Help

Hello halfway through my 200tdi conversion into my series 3 109 ex mil and wondered if making the exhaust to turbo pipe longer, instead of just making a u bend and cutting into wing would make sense eg move turbo higher and forward. how would this affect power and turbo lag

Hi Will, it depends on how much longer you make the exhaust manifold to turbo.

The best idea is to keep the volume between cylinder head and the turbo as small as possible, but obviously it's no good if it doesn't fit! Peak Power/torque shouldn't be too badly affected by a length change as I doubt the exhaust manifold uses pulse tuning anyway. I bet it's just a simple "log" manifold.

If you heat-wrap the manifold to keep heat in you'll get an improvement, possibly better than any losses you might get from moving the turbo further from the engine.

if you can notice the increse in response from heat wrap your good! the further away from the cylinder the turbo is the more lag, but a few inches wont make you up or down on a diesel realy unless you intend tracking it lol
