Tungsten

The time is coming for me to replace my welding tungsten, it's less than an inch long and is getting really hard to grind. I know most people on here swear by Huntingdon Fusion Multi strikes but I don't know where to buy them. Does anyone have a pack of them and would be willing to sell and post me one?

Treat yourself to a pack.... I get mine from fleabay in a pack of 10 for unde a tenner. I like they grey ones as they can be used AC and DC.

If no one can send me an HFMS then I'll buy a pack of 2% lanthanated as I understand they're the best.

Thanks but I don't have a collet that size and I want to try a change from thoria. I'm only looking for Huntingdon Fusion Tech Multi Strikes, if no one can help then I'll buy a pack of lanthanated.

You don't say what size, the first 2 links are for 1.6 and 2.4.
The third link seems to cover the full range but very expensive.

I'd go with your idea of getting the 2% lanthanated I doubt if you'll notice much difference in a back to back test.

Just to keep everyone updated, Antonio Costa is sending me a selection of lanthanated, thoriated and ceriated, and Richardjjj is sending me a couple of Multi strikes. If I like them I'll buy my own pack from his link. Oh, and since neither of them said anything about money, I'll donate a tenner to the forum.

Grey? They are ciriated and not the best IMO. Lanthanated 1.5/2% are a better all round electrode for point holding, ac balling and re strikes. Maker what size are you looking for? I have a few of various types I would not mind sending you a couple. I have a pack of hfms In 1.6,2.4 but cannot spare those I'm afraid as those are in constant use but I've got thoriated, 2% lanth, 1.5% lanth mostly in 2.4 some 1.6 I believe. Let me know what your size is.

Lol, only in your quest for perfection I think! I use the grey on everything. I don't have your talent to tell the difference nor put it to use between tungsten and the grey work just fine for me. I tried all the different flavours as I got free samples and my limited ability could not tell the difference!

I find that the blues hold their point better when used at the top end of their amperage range for that size of tungsten compared to greys.

Me too! Especially if I do a lot of cast repairs in aluminium... Dirty old castings are tungsten's worst friends. Actually if you do only DC work and have good post flow and don't dip the tungsten they tend to last a fair bit more than in Ac.

On AC once you stabilise the balance and they have gone to the shape of your desires very rarely do I need to dress them up again. My ac group of tungstens seem to last as long as my DC ones.

Aha, a tiny gem of info that makes looking in on this forum worthwhile, I have been using one tungsten on AC, and kept thinking I should redress it, but I kept trying a couple of welds with it it every time I had a practice and it was OK, but I did not know why. I do now.
Being new to AC, I think it was the ball on the end that did not look right.
