Hi, well i have a new dc tig, but am unsire how far out i should keep the tungsten out of the gas shroud. im using 1.6mm tungstens and a size 7 shroud. I have been ajusting it quite abit and am getting varying results, but wondered what sort of distances they should be kept out. Thanks

around 5-10mm depending on joint to be welded
I'm also quite new to TIG welding myself, but the way I (have been taught to) set the tungsten length when holding the torch at a slight pushing angle, is to stick it out far enough so that it remains at about 2mm from the work (we normally use 2.5 red tungstens), but not so far out that it will stick in the weld if you touch the shroud against the metal. This is how I do it when welding SS tubes or plates, if it were a fillet then I would do the same but deliberately run the shroud against the steel (therefore always keeping the arc length the same). As I've said, I'm no expert, and I'm sure that there are other (perhaps more precise) ways to set the tungsten length, but doing it like this should at least help you on your way.

Ok, that would make alot more sense. I always thought that distances around 5mm were too amallla nd i was keeping it out around an inch at times. lol well ill try tomoorw and see for improvements
You may have oxidised the tungsten, so make sure you clean it up/re-sharpen it.
My (beginner) rule is to keep it in as far as possible. When I do T-joins it's the furthest out, and I set it simply by loosening the holderthingy and pushing the tungsten into the corner. For lap and other "flat" joins I leave the tungsten sticking out far enough to see it, but I try to keep it as shielded as possible.

As small as the weld will allow, even inside the ceramic sometimes.............
