Trumpet player

I have been asked to make a 2m tall trumpet player, a sculpture with life and movement.
For me there is only one trumpet player. A certain Miles Davis, so I based the sculpture on the classic photo of Miles up on tippy toes blowing his lungs out.

I was peased when he stood on his tiptoes and stayed up unsupported before I stuck him on his plinth.
Also pleased with the way I managed to get him looking more muscular and flowing like in the original picture.
Last shot shows his hands and weapon.

He must be well balanced to have stood up without the plinth. Can't make my mind up whether the trumpet is too deep for my eye, meant as constructive criticism and of course everyone's perception will be different.
By the way, don't you find towing that trailer a bit hard behind your bike

Trumpet scale is similar to a bass trumpet. It's the waistband/hoop which looks slightly off, IMHO. Makes it appear like his waist is around his ****. Not meaning to criticise, but that just draws the attention a tad.

Trumpet too deep, missed that when I was making it.
The waisty bit? problem is there is no pelvis so whatever way I do it it looks unanatomical, I did try using two of them and it was too busy in the middle.

Yes like Gordon said for a trumpet it need to be longer & slimmer, yours looks more like a flugal horn or cornet. More bend in zee knees & arch in the back needed Excellent job though.

Very strange isn't what different folks pick up on.I had not notice the "waist" but on second glance at the original photo, the waist band is level with the bottom of his elbow.

These things are weird to make, if you get the proportions correct they look ridiculous.
eg his feet are tiny, make them life size (almost as long as the lower leg) they look like canoes.
Your arms come to about half way down your thigh well hands as well, if I do this they look orangutans.
I did try more bends in knees and back, he looked deformed.

I think the danger is we look at the photo and possibly expect a replica rather than an interpretation. Having said that I'm still not sure about the trumpet but accept the fact that altering it may make it look ridiculous and thus me too! Only you can decide if you're happy with it and in the end it's only the clients opinion that really matters but the great thing is we can offer our opinions, you can explain your reasons for the way it's done and we can all learn. Now thats art!

The waist? it should be higher but then there would be nothing holding it together as I build it.
hmmm, gem of an idea forming? or not. nah; it is a line not actually a waist. That has clarified that; at least to me.

Being a non musician and probably a non artistic type I just 'looked' at it and thought... smart job, it's a fella blowing a trumpet for all he is worth.

Have now went back and relooked with a more critical eye regarding the instrument and waistband and it's still a fella blowing a trumpet for all he is worth...so..works for me.

I look at my own work and tear it to pieces, this one looks fine to me,ok the trumpet is a bit fat, but it yells Trumpet!

The trumpet isn't too fat at all. There are various styles and type of trumpet.

The Kelpies, I like them I reckon I could do that up to about 3m beyond that I would be stuffed.
That is the kind of public art I like. it looks nice, people seem to like it what more does anybody need.
