Trip to see Richard

Well guys as some of you know I bought a AC/DC lorch a little while back. Never tig welded before in my life. I tried it last weekend and it wasn't great. I went to see Richard today in Cambridge and here's my results. 1.5mm mild steel. 2 or 3 mm ally and a familiar bit of 8mm steel (to make me feel at home)

Today was my second time with the tig and Richard was very helpful with instruction.

Pleased as punch Darren. I think if I had not had the arc and mig back ground it might of been a different outcome with my tig results. Getting early positive results can only be a good thing, just think where I could be in a few months time !
The 170 mile round trip was well worth it for the advice. We had to use the bulky tig gun instead of the much lighter CK gun BUT we still had a great start so when I get some extra bits for the CK I will be cooking on gas !

The welding background played a huge part in the success with tig. It was only the thin gaged filet that proved a little on the challenging side but with a bit of extra time on it you'll get it.
One thing that surprised me was just how well you took to Alu. Having never tigged before in your life then been handed 3 things to co ordinate (pedal, filler , speed) and perform a strong decent butt joint. That is a positive morning.

Don't want to derail Simon's thread but you're a midge's wimble from me buddy. I am by no means a welder but I might be able to come round and help if you want? One thing I do know well is how to make mistakes

Thankyou for that Richard confidence building and finding out how to setup the machine was what I needed. Its like a whole new world of welding has opened up. Its like going from Arc (axe) to mig (craft knife) to a tig (scalpel) they all have their place and their uses. Tig is going to be a new world for me to play around in and earn some extra pennies bring on the John smiths

Those welds are looking good, wish my first ones looked like that.

Out of all processes tig produces the nicest welds, probably the most versatile and it is a great skill to master. I was taught to oxy/acet weld in college and I think it helped me a lot when it came to tig. I hope I can still remember how to do it once I get my welder set up for tig.
